Navy Reserve / Active?

I am a new enlistee going into the Navy Reserve program. My job title will be EO (equipment opperator) I am wanting active. My recruiter iis telling me to go in as reserve, because i can leave sooner, and then once i get there, i can opt for active.. Being that i am female in a mostly male job, i would have a better chance of being able to go active... Can anyone please tell me any truth to this? I meet to sign the contract in a couple days.... Thank you
